Election 2006!
November 9, 2006
I have been wanting to write about the election, but just haven’t been able to cohere my thinking on it for some reason.
The announcement came today that Allen conceded in Virginia – so the Senate also goes to the Democrats! Yeeeeehaw! Maybe I am confused internally because as much as I wanted Congress to go Democratic, I think deep down I never thought that it would happen. I am so happy that it did though!!!!
We finally, FINALLY, might get some accountability in the US government! No more rubber stamping of Bush initiatives! No more secret hearings and I hope, HOPE!, we start to get back a lot of our rights that have been taken away! Hopefully torture will no longer be allowed as an interrogation tactic.
I went to bed happy with anticipation Tuesday night. I was hoping to catch GWB’s press conference, but realized that it was going to be on at 8am Hawaii time and 1) there was no way I was going to stay up that late for that and 2) there was no way I was going to be able to get up in time for that. I am currently kicking myself for not watching it because he announced Rummy’s resignation during that press conference. Holy Crap! I don’t know how I feel about Bob Gates running the Pentagon though. Unfortunately, I don’t know enough about him to make any judgments right now, but what I have read has left me with an uneasy feeling.
It was also announced today that Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman is going to resign his post in January. The news reports say that he had been thinking about it for a few months now. Mehlman himself hasn’t announced this yet, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the news reports are true. What I find most interesting though is that the announcement is coming the day after Bill Maher was interviewed on Larry King Live. During this interview, Maher claimed that Mehlman was gay. What makes this more interesting though is that CNN edited this out in their west coast feeds and edited it out of the transcripts. The original interview was posted on YouTube and the person who posted it got a cease and desist letter to take the video down.
Personally, I don’t believe that gay people should be outed against their will – it is a very personal decision for that person – especially if they are in a position of power. But at the same time, I think censorship is wrong. I mean did CNN edit that to save themselves a libel suit? But if someone was sued, wouldn’t Bill Maher be sued?
