I went swimming again Tuesday! Woot! I am getting so tan, it’s ridiculous. I am now using at a minimum 45 SPF sunscreen, but I am still getting dark. What’s up with that?
I did 6 “laps” this time between the life guard stands. I think the stands are at least 50 meters apart from each other, but it’s pretty hard to tell. Each lap takes me about 4 or 5 minutes and then I rest for about 5 or 10 minutes, HA!
I did the elliptical at the gym for about 30 minutes Monday and it actually aggravated my bad knee! CRAP! You would think that because it is low/no impact that it wouldn’t, but it did! Walking actually doesn’t aggravate it though, but I am so not ready to get on a treadmill at the gym.
I went back to the gym Wednesday at about 10 pm and the place was so freaking crowded!!!! Gah! I did 20 minutes on the bike and then another 10 on the elliptical. My bad knee doesn’t hurt as bad as it did Monday, but it is still a little tender.
Again, I saw 1 gal doing some weight work. I don’t know what to do. I don’t know if I should continue this and go back to workout DVD’s, or if I just need to stick with it and maybe transfer to the gym with a women’s only section. The only problem with the 24 with the women’s only section is that there is very little parking and it is a bit further than the 24 downtown. I mean, it’s not like it is completely inconvenient to get to, it’s just a bit out of the way.
I’ve read some reviews about the personal trainers at 24 hour fitness too and it seems like they are just there to sell supplements and protein shakes. I forgot to ask the sales guy about the personal trainer qualifications when I went too, but I am getting the feeling that they probably are not certified by any national organization.
Gah, I don’t know what to do. Should I keep the gym membership or just go back to what I was doing on my own? Today is supposed to be a rest day for me. I need to give my knee some rest, but I am wondering if I should just go check out the center with the women’s only section tonight and see if I like that since I only have 1 day left to cancel.
Of course, I also have an optometrist appointment at 6 tonight and then I have to pick my cousin’s up from the airport around 7pm or so.

I went swimming at the beach again Sunday. It was really nice. Shinnyo-en were setting things up for the Memorial Day Lantern Floating ceremony and so we got to get a peek through their dress rehearsal.

Swimming is so much fun though. Fred brought along his noodle chair and I just couldn’t stop laughing when he was using it. I think that a bunch of us should get one and then we can have a noodle chair regatta. We just need to improvise some paddles and we’ll be good to go!
My swimming is definitely improving. I was able to swim between the two life guard chair landmarks continuously. Ok, the 2 life guard chairs really aren’t that far from each other, but I am out of shape.
I told Fred about that 24 hour fitness special I saw and with his encouragement, I signed up on Monday. YIKES!!! Of course I got the hard sales pitch and gave in and signed up for a 3 year plan. EGADS!!! I do have 4 more days to consider and cancel if I want. But, if I stick with it, the renewal would be $29 a year each year I continue.
The plan I signed up with also comes with 5 sessions with a personal trainer, so I am a little excited about that, although I wonder if I could just cancel the personal training sessions and get a refund on what I paid. I have no idea. I was so freaking nervous before I went.
I was going to workout right after I signed up, but it was getting a little late and I had to take my cousins to the airport, so we left.
I did go back after the airport run though. There were still quite a few people there even though it was after 10pm. I stayed about an hour, but only really worked out for about 30 minutes. I did a 20 minute stint on the elliptical and that kicked my ass even though I was probably on level 1. Sigh. You never realize just how out of shape you are until you try to do some steady state cardio. I couldn’t do the whole 20 minutes in 1 shot either, I had to stop for about 20 or 30 seconds and get some water, but I made it!
After that I was going to use an exercise bike, but I just couldn’t get the seat right, so I went back to an elliptical for another 10 minutes.
I took a look at some of the weight machines then, but it was just kind of weird. There were some women there, but it was mostly guys and the whole time I was there, only a couple of women used the weight machines.
Gah, going to the gym is just so intimidating. I just need to get over it.
I’ll see how I feel tomorrow. I am planning on starting off at 3 days a week for at least a couple of weeks and then slowly moving up from there. I kind of want to work on my cardio since I am scheduled to meet with a personal trainer in a couple of weeks, so I don’t want to be too fucked when I go.

I took a rest day Saturday. Yikes! I was so feeling so beat! I think it was the swimming.
My Mom and I did our annual Memorial Day flower deliveries to our ancestors’ graveyards today. Her uncle is buried in Punchbowl National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. I’ll post some pictures later, I am too lazy today.
I did a little clothes shopping Saturday - man, was that depressing. I bought some stuff I was sure was going to be too big for me, but nope, it fits just right. Grrr. I really gotta step it up, I don’t want to be this heavy anymore.
I was contemplating joining the local YMCA, but then I was futzing around the 24 Hour Fitness website and I found out they are running a promotion where you prepay for 1 year, get 1 year free. It’s tempting since it’s one of those all club access passes, but it’s a lot of money to put out up front. It comes down to a little under $30/month for 2 years - which in the long run would be cheaper than the YMCA, but I would have to fork over a lot of cash up front and really make that commitment to work out so I get my money’s worth.
But, I also found a coupon for $25 off the initiation fee, so, BONUS! Another good thing about 24 hour fitness is that Fred goes there, so I could always bum a ride off of him to get there. HA! Or at least have a workout buddy. I just have a few days to decide about joining 24 since I think the offer expires at the end of the month, so I will be doing a lot of thinking between now and then.

A new documentary about credit card debt is coming to a video store near you in a little over a week. The video clip above is a little long - it runs about 10 minutes, but it is quite interesting.
The Maxed Out website can be found here.

Okay, I am just going to take a little break from Debbie for a few days, or at least from Ramp It Up! Maybe I’ll do her Slim Series Express workouts since that is also a popular search phrase for people to find my blog. I already did a review of a Cardio Core Express and Cool It Off Express.
I did something different for my workout on Friday. I went swimming at the beach! My friend Fred has been doing what he calls mini biathlons at the beach, (swimming and walking/running), and he kept bugging me to join him, so I finally did Friday - except for the walking/running part.
I haven’t been full on swimming in years. I don’t really count snorkeling as swimming - it does, but it doesn’t. I was surprised I was able to keep up with him for the most part. I mean, we both swam a little and then rested a bit, then swam some more and then rested. All in all I think we were in the water for about 40 or 45 minutes. Which reminds me - I really need to get a water proof/resistant watch.
It was really nice. The water was cool and there were a lot of other swimmers out there doing their thing. I really should go swimming more often. Heck, years ago I used to be able to swim those 50 meter laps at the local Olympic sized pool. NOT ANYMORE. Crap. I used to think that I was in terrible shape back then because I wasn’t stick thin, but dang, looking back now, I was pretty fit.
Another bonus of going swimming at the beach - all of the male eye candy. Growl! I never thought I would be interested in dating ever again after my last boyfriend dumped me, but nope, I think I could handle it again or at least going out and having some fun. I just need to get some confidence back in me and then start looking around again.
I was debating on doing another workout tonight, but nope, I am too pooped from swimming so the rest of the night is going to be time for rest. Yippy!
