Holiday Recap

Thank Bob the holidays are over.

Yea, my Mom and I started fighting a bit on Christmas Eve. Okay, a lot. I did not go to the Christmas Eve party that I was supposed to - partly because I had so much crap to do and partly because I just could not stand being around my Mom anymore. My Mom went and of course, as soon as she came back, she started acting like nothing happened. I am so sick of her childish antics. I pretty much decided that night that screw this, instead of saving for my dream trip to Europe, I am going to be saving to move back to the mainland.

Argh, it’s like my dream trip to Europe is jinxed or something. Every time I start planning a trip there, something happens and I can’t go. Some day I suppose - some day.

The Christmas dinner we had with friends and family went pretty well - mostly because I just stayed away from my Mom the whole evening. My cousin made a rib roast, scalloped potatoes, a mushroom and asparagus dish, saffron rice and a shrimp curry. Hot Diggity! It was all very tasty. I didn’t take any pictures though. I just was not in the mood.

I had been thinking about going out to see a movie that night, but I was just too tired that night.

I had to work the next day and it was really nice actually. I was the only one in the office for most of the day. The senator did come in for a little while, but I was by myself most of the day so I actually got a lot of stuff done. Hurray!

Yea, work has been okay. I mean, this past week wasn’t so bad because of all of the holidays. I didn’t want to be around my Mom that much though, so I even went in for a half day on New Year’s Eve, (NYE), - even though I had the whole day off.

New Year’s Eve was okay. I had no idea what I wanted to do that night. I wanted to go out, but at the same time I wanted to just stay home. I was supposed to go to a party at a friend’s house that night, but my other friend came over to hang out for a little bit and I decided to just stay home after chilling on my patio.

I had a really great view that night. People in Hawaii love to go crazy with the fireworks on NYE. I mean Craaazy. Firecrackers and novelties are still allowed, but aerial fireworks are not. Aerial fireworks have been banned here for awhile now, but you would never be able to tell that was the case.

New Year's Eve in Kalihi

I think this was taken just around midnight. All of those bright things are aerials. People just went nuts this year. It was awesome.

New Year's Eve in Honolulu

Eek!

Yea, there are a couple of major fireworks shows every year, but I can’t see them from my house. Heck, with all of the stuff going on, it really didn’t matter if I saw them or not. I had a great show from my balcony this year.

I did set off a strand of about 3,000 firecrackers a little after midnight - to ward any evil spirits away.

We follow a few Japanese New Year’s traditions around here. We set out a little “shrine” of mochi, ferns and tangerines every year. We also usually eat fried mochi after midnight, but I didn’t this year. I still haven’t and I really should get on that, but it is just not appealing to me for some reason, and I love that stuff!

We also usually make a batch of nishime which is a Japanese vegetable stew.

Nishime

My Mom usually makes it and adds too much sugar, but I don’t think she actually added any sugar this year. Thank goodness. I used to hate nishime when I was a kid, but I’ve grown to really love it. I think I never really liked it before because my Grandma would always add a ton of shiitake mushrooms and I really don’t like shiitake mushrooms - at least the dried kind, I don’t know if I’ve ever had fresh shiitakes.

But, it’s back to work and the real craziness of work is just about to begin.  I feel like I am getting a little screwed though.  Because of certain hiring decisions, I think I am going to be making about $400 less per month than people in other offices.  Eeek!!!!  And, I am probably going to be doing more work than people in comparable positions in other offices too.

I have no idea what is going to happen this session.  Our clerk is freaking out, I mean really freaking out.  She is not a very organized person and you have to be really organized when you are in that position.  I kind of want to help her out, but at the same time, I don’t because if she does resign from that position, well, I don’t think I want to be the person jumping in there - especially if my pay wouldn’t increase.

But, I know I am going to hang in there - just to see what happens.

I should try to get to bed now.  It’s almost midnight, but even though I am tired, I don’t know if I can sleep just yet.  Oh well.
